Things to Do in Akron, Ohio This Week: September 2 to 14

Labor Day week runs long on the calendar this year, so we're looking at the whole stretch from Wednesday, September 2 through Monday, September 14. It's a heavy run at Blossom, a last home stand downtown, and a couple of smaller rooms worth the drive.

Rob Zombie & Marilyn Manson with The Hu & Orgy

A four-band industrial and metal bill that starts early because it has a lot to get through. The Hu bring throat singing and Mongolian folk instruments to a rock crowd, which is a stranger and better opener than headliners like these usually get. Dress for the lawn; early September at Blossom can go either way once the sun is down.

Akron RubberDucks vs. Richmond Flying Squirrels

Five games in five nights against Richmond, and the last time the RubberDucks play at home this season. Late-season Double-A baseball downtown is cheap and unhurried, and the weeknight starts are early enough to get home at a reasonable hour. The Sunday finale is the last chance to sit in the park until spring.

The Cleveland Orchestra: The Music of John Williams

Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, and the rest, played by the orchestra that spends its summers here. It's a holiday-weekend Sunday with a 6 pm start, which makes it the easiest concert of the fortnight to bring kids to. Bring a blanket for the lawn and get there before the light goes.

TLC & Salt-N-Pepa with En Vogue

Three acts that owned the radio in the early nineties on one bill, and a crowd that will know every word. Expect a Thursday that feels like a Saturday, and a slow crawl out of the lot afterward.

Red Wanting Blue at Lock 3

A Columbus rock band that has been playing Ohio rooms for a quarter century and treats Akron like a home date. Lock 3 is outdoors on Main Street, a short walk from the ballpark, and it's the easiest night on this list to walk to dinner before and a bar after.

Lewis Black Live

The angriest man in stand-up, still shouting about the news, in a room built for exactly this kind of show. It's the same night as the Lock 3 show, so pick your Friday; this one is the indoor option with the later start and the longer drive north.
